Does Google Use Meta Description and Keyword?

On September 21, 2009, Matt Cutt from Google stated that Google is not considering meta keywords in web ranking at all because of the Keyword Meta tag being abused by Webmasters. You must have seen many websites using a bunch of keywords in Meta Description but you can not duck your head after this announcement.

I think it was a very clear message there by Google that It is no more using Meta Description for search ranking purposes but may use as a short snippet in SERP. In fact, webmasters community alleges that Google does not disclose such thing via proper media. You can find the statement at Google Webmaster Blog that “Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don’t use the description meta tag in our ranking.” Here is the video by Matt Cutt also.
It has passed more than three years now. We did a test to validate this fact in top three web search giants Google, Yahoo and Bing.

We have put unique keyword “2w4twet6i01” in Meta Description of this page and “1ektdetwbi0d” in Meta Keywords of this page but nowhere in this page content (In this sentence these are images).

Story continue here…

This page is cached in all three search engine for more than a month now and I can see  description containing the unique keyword in description while checking site index in all three search engines. Here are final outcome of this test:

# Google: While searching these two unique keyword in Google, no results were there which makes this statement true that Google is no more using Meta Description or Meta Keywords for search ranking purpose.

#Yahoo: Yahoo has similar results and conclusion.

#Bing: Bing also has similar results and conclusion.

Recommendations:

Have Keywords in Description: So what we can do is write meta description as a marketing pitch and increase our website click through rate. Use major keywords in description because keywords in search query are displayed in bold.
Ideal Length: Meta description can be 155 characters or 30 words long. Most of the search engines shows this much of length in SERP.

No Duplicate Description: It is better to have no meta description instead of having duplicate description because in case of no description, search engine may populate text snippet from page having relevant keywords.
